October Expansions Practice : Homecoming

  • Village Yoga Pemberton 7433 Frontier Street Pemberton, BC, V0N 2L0 Canada (map)

Our yoga practice is often framed as a way of coming home to one's self. We learn to withdraw our attention from a chaotic outer life and, just for a moment, come home to the present. But what happens when ideas of where home is and how we can find it are interrupted? Community, family, land, culture, the body, the breath... all these and more can be reliable sources of refuge, but all these are also subject to change. As much as those places we call "home" are necessary and supportive, displacement from that source of "home" is often an uncomfortable reality.

We might expand our view by considering how the theme of displacement plays out in life, both locally or abroad. Entire peoples around the world long for a home that can never be reclaimed exactly as it was. In what ways is the longing for home an essential human experience, and in what ways does this longing differ between peoples?

Yoga is a practice of homecoming, and while on its own cannot fix imminent problems, it offers a place to inquire into these questions and expand our worldview with compassion. The October Expansions class will be an exploration of what home and homecoming might mean in the face of modern life, displacement, and the certainty of change. In addition to soulful conversation, expect to explore these questions in the body through a deep, well-rounded practice.
